A Cook County jury has awarded $12.2 million to the family of Shirley Adams, a Chicago woman who died due to negligent care at a North Side nursing home.
Adams, 79, passed away in February 2023 from complications related to untreated pressure wounds. Her family, represented by lawyers from Levin & Perconti, alleged that understaffing and poor oversight at Lakeview Rehabilitation and Nursing Center caused her condition to deteriorate. The jury ruled against the facility and its management company, Infinity Healthcare Management of Illinois, after a three-day trial.
Paul Connery, one of the attorneys, remarked, "She suffered through extensive and painful treatments for the last 16 months of her life because of inexcusable nursing care. The jury's verdict recognized her family's pain and moves them closer to healing."
This award is the largest nursing home verdict in Illinois history. Adams entered the facility in June 2021 and was initially in good health, but her condition declined rapidly, leading to multiple surgeries before her death. Attorney Steve Levin stated, "This was a preventable tragedy. The Adams family received justice and accountability, but it will not bring their mother back." endured."
